Managing
ADD
As an ADD Coach, I
usually begin my conversations with new and potential clients by
saying, "Tell me about yourself and why you're looking for
coaching." Most people answer with a long list of their ADD
challenges. Very few people answer that they are looking to discover,
enhance, or utilize their strengths. This is a big part of coaching,
and a part that many people need a lot of help with.
Daily
Planning for ADD
For adults
with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), details are a drag. We
tend to see the big picture and want to jump straight to the finish
line, wishing we could skip all the steps in between. Unfortunately,
this perspective often causes us to become overwhelmed when it's
time to start a project. We know where we want to end up, but
we don't know where to start.
Moderate
Drinking
For
me this is going back 40 or so years, to my Aunt and Uncle. Aunty
had a bad ticker and, on her doctor's advice, took a shot of scotch
every evening. Uncle Bud didn't have any problem with "a shot" every
night. Where Uncle Bud drew the line was her insistence on having
2 or even 3 "shots" every night. And Aunty's "shots" were
more like "ponys" than shots...an ounce and a half to
two ounces rather than just one ounce! This is back in the early
1960's. But...she did live an extra 10-12 years beyond the original "less
than a year" prognosis, which the doctor's attributed to the "kick-start" effect
of those massive shots on her heart!
Fresh
Juice Combos for Weight
For
many--if not most--of us, it's a constant battle between our cravings for fattening
food and wanting to lose weight. Drinking freshly squeezed organic juice is a
great way to feed your body condensed nutrients that are easy to digest. Fresh
juice gives your body a break from the digestion process and fills you up, making
it easier to lose weight. And as a bonus, because fresh juice has not been heated
(heat destroys many beneficial micronutrients), your immune system has more energy
to heal whatever might be ailing you.
Whole
Foods Companion
"Whole
Foods Companion" is a wonderful resource about foods from
the earth. The author, Dianne Onstad, brings us more information
in this revised and expanded edition based on her 1994 success!
Dianne Onstad is involved in nutrition education, as well as in
the promotion of organic whole foods. She even has a special interest
in living and raw foods.
Sugar
Addiction
No
doubt about it! We are a nation of addicts with sugar and re-fined
carbohydrates ranking right at the top of the list. Sugar and
its relations are absolutely everywhere and like wallpaper, we
tend not to see it, even though it surrounds us on all four walls.
Sugar is a substance that can be abused, and while not formally
listed along with other drugs, it is responsible for a host of
problems ranging from chronic disease to poor cognitive or mind
function. While some individuals can see the problem, many cannot.
Fewer understand it and even less know how to manage it on a long-term
basis. There are some people who question whether or not there
is a need to manage it, accepting it as just a small problem sitting
in a sea of bigger and more important problems. Let's be clear
about this. It is not.
How
I Lost 21 Pounds
While
searching for information on weight loss surgery, I happened on
a study from Japan on apple polyphenols. It said that animals
given these apple phytochemicals lost almost 30% of their organ
fat after only three weeks. In addition, these lab rats also increased
muscle strength. "Wow," I said to myself. I wondered
if it might work for me too. It occurred to me that the apple
chemicals might be "rejuvenating" the lab animals, since
organ fat increases with age. Other studies said these polyphenols
were very safe. So I went to the health food store.
